It is better to cut about a quarter of an inch too small than to have a patch that has to be forced into the space. Using the straight edge to ensure the sides are straight and the corners are square, cut the new drywall to fit inside the hole. Otherwise, use the tape measurer to get the dimensions of the space you need to fill. If you have the damaged drywall available to use as a template, lay it over the new drywall, and use a utility knife to cut the new drywall section to size. If you can keep the damaged drywall intact while removing it, you can use that piece as a template for cutting out the replacement drywall. You can remove the drywall by hand or with the backside of a hammer. Get rid of heavily damaged drywall by cutting a rectangular shape around the area with the keyhole saw. If you need to replace a larger section, you may need to purchase a full sheet of drywall, which can be difficult to manage on your own. For small sections, drywall patches are easier to manage and install. If a portion of the water-damaged drywall needs to be replaced, aim to keep your cuts straight and squared at the corners.
